چکیده

INTRODUCTION Afforestation activities in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (LMRAV) are currently peaking after the past four decades of extensive deforestation (Allen 1997, King and Keeland 1999, Stanturf and others 1998). Different forces drive the afforestation efforts of public resource agencies, conservation organizations, private corporations, and private landowners. Their interests include conversion of economically marginal agricultural land to forest cover for ecosystem rehabilitation, soil conservation, aesthetics, and recreation. They may want to establish intensively managed fiber farms and carbon sequestration banks, and to mitigate forested wetlands destroyed elsewhere in development projects.

An Afforestation System for Restoring Bottomland Hardwood Forests: Biomass Accumulation of Nuttall Oak Seedlings Interplanted Beneath Eastern Cottonwood

Bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States have declined in extent since European settlement. Forest restoration activities over the past decade, however, have driven recent changes in land use through an intensified afforestation effort on former agricultural land. This intense afforestation effort, particularly in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, has generated a deman...

Recognizing and Overcoming Difficult Site Conditions for Afforestation of Bottomland Hardwoods

SEPTEMBER 2004 183 In the last decade, about 370,000 acres (150,000 ha) of economically marginal farmland in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) have been restored to bottomland hardwood forests (Stanturf and others 1998, King and Keeland 1999, Schoenholtz and others 2001). Planting of this considerable acreage is due to several federal programs, such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (W...

Restoration of Southern Ecosystems

Restoration of the myriad communities of bottomland hardwood and wetland forests and of the diverse communities of fire-dominated pine forests is the subject of intense interest in the Southern United States. Restoration practice is relatively advanced for bottomland hardwoods and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and less so for swamps and shortleaf pine (P. echinata Mill.). Most bottomla...

Comparing regeneration techniques for afforesting previously farmed bottomland hardwood sites in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, USA

Bottomland hardwood forests are highly productive ecosystems located along the floodplains of rivers and streams throughout the central and eastern United States (Hodges, 1994). These ecosystems provide important functions including hydrologic flux and storage, biological productivity, biogeochemical cycling and storage, decomposition and wildlife habitat (Richardson, 1994). Bottomland hardwood...

Hypotheses for Common Persimmon Stand Development in Mixed-species Bottomland Hardwood Forests

Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a shade-tolerant tree species found in southern bottomland hardwood forests. It is a desired species due primarily to its large fruit used by many wildlife species. While it has been observed as a component in natural reproduction, persimmon is rarely found as an overstory species in maturing bottomland hardwood stands. Unfortunately, little informa...
